45 minute inquiry - 2nd December 2013

Curling.
The history of curing. Curling was named "Roarin Game" because of the noise the granite stone travels over the ice. In 1530-1569 people played the game in frozen ponds. There was evidence that John McQuhin from Latin recorded a book on curling.

The rules of curling are you need a curling sheet. The teams throw 2 stones each the curling sheet, with the players on each side alternating shots. After sixteen stones there will hopefully be a winner. The winner is the team with the highest score after the teams have thrown 16 stones. There is up to 8players in a team. The game time is 73 minutes. Each team player gets 60 seconds to throw the stone. 10 minutes per team. If there is a tie then a team player has 60 seconds to throw a stone and the winner then wins the game.

The equipment that you need for curling is a curling sheet, curling stone, curling broom, curling shoes.

Curling was first invented in Scotland in February of 1541.

Curling is quite an expensive sport. All of the equipment can cost you more than $1000.00 in total. The curling granite stones cost at least $600.00 or more and weigh at least 26 kilos.

45 Minute Inquiry - Port of Tauranga

Today for 45 minute inquiry we studdied about the logs at the Port of Tauranga.

The logs are imported from Asia, sent here on a container ship. The type of trees are pine trees. The 1899 the government planted a forest of pine trees in Whakarewareaw, near Rotorua then in 2000 forestry people cut them down and imported them into ports and made paper.

Asia then started importing logs here then New Zealand put a special treatment in them and sent them back to Asia. If the ships are imported from Asia they come over on a container ship. If they are coming from other parts of New Zealand they use a logging truch or a train.

Tauranga Girls College Orientation day

Today we had the girls college orientation day. We bussed there and met in the old gymnasium. The Kapahaka group greeted us with a Maori song. Then Mrs Furguson talked and handed over to head girl Adriana Bird who talked to us about all of the opurtinitys.

Mrs Ferguson is one of the four deputy principals. Mrs Glaser-Brown and Mrs Keightley are our deans for 2014.

We walked around in little groups and had a tour around the school with Year 9's. We went into the science department and the teacher there talked to us about our first day and what we need to do when we get to school. We got given a booklet with our stationary list and our plan for the first week.

45 minute inqury

Today for 45 minute enquiry we researched about Boomerangs, Maori Carvings, Whale boots, Totem poles.
Totem poles are sculptures carved made out of trees that are a western red colour. Totem poles originate from Western America.
Boomerang is a tool that you throw. There is a type of boomerang that you can get that spins back to you after you throw it. Boomerangs first originated from Australia.
Maori Carvings is a traditional carving that is made out of stone, wood or bone. You can find Maori Carvings at Maire.

Whale Boots are made out of Grey leather with a white ribbon that is tied around the top of the boot. Inuits wear them were they live.

What do all of these things have in common? All to do with indigenous cultures.

45 minute inquiry - Koi Carp Bow hunting

Last Saturday Mrs Mills went to Huntly to bow hunt for koi carp. She was hunting them because they are a pest. They eat native fish and their eggs. They pollute the water by stirring up the mud and it kills native trees. Koi carp can grow up to 80cm and can weigh up to 10kg.

Mrs Mills went bow hunting last weekend because the koi carp were spawning (breeding) and they come into the shallows to do this.

Bow hunting is a sport that requires a bow and arrow. You also need a line attached to the arrow so you can retrieve the fish and arrow. You do not need a license in NZ to bow hunt. It has been around since the Victorian era.

Mrs Mills caught 6 koi carp. She didn’t throw them back into the water because you can receive a fine.  She left them on the side of the lake and they were taken by some fishermen.

Which button would you push and why?

I would choose the red button that gives you the ability to turn completely invisible including your clothes. I chose the red button because you sneek out at night to your friends houses. You could get a great job at being a spy. Get free anything because you could walk into a shop and take anything you want without being seen. You could sneed into a concert and then after the concert you would go into their car and go back to their house with them like one direction or something. You could sneek onto a plane without anyone knowing or seeing.

P.E - Tennis

This morning for P.E we played tennis. It was alot of fun.

Tennis Skills

What was hard? Nothing really because I play tennis.

What were you doing wrong? Sometimes I didn't stand like you do on a surfboard so the ball went sideways not straight.

What did you improve on? I improved on my serve.

We made up a couple of rules:
We played doubles. We got into partners and played tennis against eachother.
The rule was when a team got to 3 points they were the winners and kept playing until they were beaten.
When someone served if it hit the net it would be a fault and they would have another turn but if they didn't get it that time then it would be a point to the other time.
My partner was Sharnae. Brooke and Anna were the winners and when we played them we bet them, but then we played against each other again we lost. So we came 2nd.

Life Education Blog Post 2012.

Life Education Blog Post 2013.

What did I learn?
I learnt about delaying the decision until our brain has stopped developing at the age of 25. But if we can wait longer which Michael hoped we could then that would be the best way to go.

How will I use this new learning?
I will Delay the decision and never do drugs. I have now learnt so much about it and I now know what to do if I am in some of the situations on the videos we watched. I now know to use sayings to help me get out of things I don't want to do.

How could I help someone else?
I can help them in situations like what we watched on the videos. I can help them make an informed decision and give them information that we learnt in the van about the drug or what ever they are being persuaded into doing.

I have really enjoyed Life Education this year because we all now know allot about drugs and now know the effects that can happen when you take drugs.

Waimarino

On Thursday 7th of November room 41 and 42 went to Waimarino for the day. When we arrived we went through the rules and the safety. Then we went kayaking. First when we were out on the water we made a raft up. Then we had some free time. After free time we played shark and seal where there were 2 sharks and the sharks were trying to get the seals. To do that they had to come up to us and tag out kayak.

After we came off the water we had lunch and then went to did some activities for the rest of the day. There is the high diving board, the low diving board, the tarzan swing, the hydro slide where you can take a kayak down, the UFO is a big trampoline in the middle of the water and it has a mini blob on it, a water slide and some ladders for you to climb up. There is also the blob which is a humongas cushion in the water and someone jumps down on it and climbs to the end and the someone else jumps on it and you go flying in the air. It is so much fun!

Why should other schools go to Waimarino?
I think other schools should get the opportunity to go to Waimarino because it is an amazing place. You get taught so much there like how to put on a life jacket, how to kayak, how to swim and you give yourself more confidence if you try new things.

I was thinking before acting. I was thinking before I went on the gladiator pole if I would have a safe landing. I was thinking about what activities I wanted to do.

I was relating to others when I was including my friends and going on activities with my friends.

I was using signs, symbols and text when we had to read the rules of the activity, the rules of the water park and the map of where to go.

I was managing myself when I said I can spend this amount of time on this activity and that much time on that activity so I can do most of the activities.

I was participating and contributing when I did the activities because I didn't just sit out and do nothing, I was participating and joining in with the fun!

Here are a couple of photos:

12 Hour Relay

On Friday was the 12 hour relay. The 12 hour relay is when a team is chosen from each house and runs for 12 hours swapping each lap like a relay. The runners in the team had to be there at 6:30am and started running at 7:00am.
My sister was in it so I had to arrive at 6:30am iswell.

Block 1:
I went and help make sandwiches for the runners. Then some of my friends came in and helped me count how many to give to each team. Later on we went and delivered them.

Block 2:
In block 2 I went out and took photos and videos of the top town activities. Some of the activities are sack races, gunboot throw, torozontal bungy and lots more. Then I went back to the food tech room and helped clean up.

Block 3:
During block 3 Rimu, Manuka and Matai was the audience for the talent show. There were some amazing acts, some crazy acts and some funny acts.

After school:
I stayed after school because my sister was running so I had to stay. My friends sister came from college so we hung out and went to the food tent and fraser cove. Then when we came back we cheered on everyone untill 5pm.

Here is a photo of the day:

Why do bees swarm?

Why do bees swarm?

When a coloney is formed there can be up to  10,000 - 20,000 workers. When bees make a beehive they have one Queen Bee. This queen bee is a honey bee. When the hive gets too big the bees none of the bees have access to the queen anymore so that means they aren't receieving her signals so they don't know what to do. When that happens the bees that don't have access to her move away and fiind a knew queen and create another beehive.

NZCT Aims Games 2013

NZCT Aims Games 2013

Last week was the NZCT Aims Games.
The Aims Games is a sporting competition organised by Sport Bay Of Plenty.
166 Schools from around New Zealand (2 from Australia, 1 from Rarotonga)
come to compete in the sport that they have been chosen to compete in.

I went to watch some of the sports such as:
- Hockey
- Cross Country
- Soccer
- Basketball
- Netball
- Swimming

At hockey I watched our T.I.S team. They were playing John Paul College.
It was so intense. At half time it was 0-0 then at the last 2 minutes of the whole game our team scored 2 goals!!! The score ended up being 2-0 to us. We won.

At Cross Country I was also supporting T.I.S and also A.N.I because my cousin was in the team. Everyone did so well! We were all proud of everyone with their placings. I really enjoyed watching. Our T.I.S team ended up coming 1st overall (second in the relay. We had a third for Yr 8 boys, a first for Yr 7 boys.)

At soccer I was going to watch my cousin from A.N.I. Their team did very well. They won their first game 6-0 and then their second game was taken to penalty shoot outs which unforlunatly the other team won, but it was a close score of
3-2.

At Basketball I went to watch our T.I.S boys playing A.N.I and they lost, I can't remember the score but it was something big. Then I went and watched the T.I.S girls playing off for 3rd and 4th. They sadly lost by 1 point the score I think was 31-32. There was a few injurys and tears but everyone did an amazing job.

At Netball I watched our T.I.S invatation team. I can't remember who they were playing. But I think they lost. They have a very strong team. They both scored goals but I don't know what the score was because I went to go watch the hockey game.

On Tuesday after school I went to swimming to support my T.I.S friend Marijke. She was doing so well! Untill it came to her 50m freestyle because sshe dived too early and got disqualified, but if she hadn't been disqualified she would have came second with a Silver medal. She ended up getting a medal in the either 100m backstroke or 200m backstroke, I can't remember. But she did an amazing job and she is an amazing swimming.

At Aims Games 2013 I had an amazing time watching all of the sports. Our school (T.I.S) cam first overall. We have won it everytime. The NZCT Aims Games are held every year and each year they seem to be getting bigger!

Cool Fact: The NZCT Aims Games are half the size of the Olympics.

Norm Hewitt SPCA Assembly

Today in Block 2 Norm Hewitt came in and talked to us about Animal Care.
When Norm Hewitt was 7 he wanted to be a cowboy, he had cow boy p.j's, sheets, duvets and his favourite cowboy had on his bed. His family were watching the All Blacks play one night while Norm Hewitt had his cow boy asssescories on, he saw them do the huka and decided thats it, I want to be an All Black. So from then on all he wanted to do was be an All Black which he achieved. He played Hooker No.2.
After he was an All Black he started to love dancing. He decided to enter Dancing with the stars and got to the finals in that and ended up winning!
He talked to us about why we should be looking after animals.
He was very inspiring.

Kaitlyn setting and story openings

WALT: describe the setting of a story using ‘show’ not ‘tell’
SC:
- to use descriptive language to help the reader visualise the setting
- to use language that activates the readers’ senses e.g smell and sound
- to use similes and metaphors to describe the setting
- to use interesting vocab to describe the setting

Comment from buddy:
I like how you describe the talking like a chainsaw and how you call the principal the boss, you could have said a little more about what the sport you were playing was and you could of had a few more similes and metaphors and also you could have added some more descriptive language to help the reading know what the story is about
- Lachlan

The noisy chatter of people as they walk past. They talk as loud as a chainsaw! I see the swings swinging as I walk past. I walk to the fresh green area and start practicing sport with a ball. I look around and wonder where everyone is. I hear the bell ring and go line up. I walk towards the big carpeted room. I see rows of seats. My row sits down. We waited patiently for the Boss to come up and talk to us. We stand as he enters the room then sit back down. Our teacher hands out our books while we wait for everyone else to arrive and we get time to talk to each other about our work. Once everyone has arrived the Boss speaks. Once he has finished we go back to our room. Then another bell rings and everyone flies out the door.

Can you guess where the setting of my story it?

Dangerous Decibels 20/08/2013

20/08/2013
Today in 2nd block we went over to the otherside of the school and learnt about the dangerous decibels programme about hearing. I learnt that 85 decibels is the most you should be listning to when or where ever you are. If you find that it is over 85 decibels you will loose you hearing over time.
First we got cards and we had to guess if the picture on the card was safe or dangerous. Most of them were dangerous. Then we got a tune fork and knocked it on the ground and put it up to our air, it viabrated, then we banged it on the ground again and put it on our hand. Then we banged it on the ground again and put a pingpong ball with string on it, the teacher said that that was the decibels of a rock concert which can defin your hearning in 15 seconds and the decibel of it is 120.
We got taught about volume on ipods and laptops and you should never have your sound full volume because it can damage your hearing in about 2 minutes and it is 110 decibels. So when I get home I am going to change my laptop and Ipod volume to below halfway.

Interesting Fact - When Frogs lose part of their hearing they can actually grow it back.

Something I learnt - 85 decibels is the most you should be listning too or hearing.

Something I am going to change - Turn down my ipod and laptop sound when I have my headphones in.

Homework Challenge Blog Post

Compete in a sport for an entire season

Tonight I have a hockey game at 5pm and TBC. We are playing Oatomotai B team, it is just a friendly game. I hope we will win because even though we are a B team we are in the A grade so we play A teams so I hope we win. The position I play is Back. Back is when you wait down by the oponents goal and help your teams goalie from them not scoring. I really enjoy playing back, it is my favourite position.

A Most Triumphant Tale

The last week I have been in the school production, A most Triumphant Tale. I was a dancer in Swan Lake and we had to wear ballet tights, leotard and a chiffon ballet skirt.

Also in the production was a mowtown scene with the Diana Ross and the Supremes and Jimmi Hendrix, Woodstock, Starman, Paul Mcartney, One Dimension, Labrinth, Shakira, Usher, CeeloGreen, Carson Daly, Mozart and John Lennon

I have really enjoyed being in the production, you meet lots of different students and get to dress up in our costumes. We had 5 shows, one on Tuesday night, two on Wednesday and two on Thursday.
My school came to the matenae on Thursday and some of the teachers dressed up and came on stage in the middle of our peformences.

My funniest parts in the show on Thursday was when Mr Applman dressed up in a tutu and came on when the dancers and I were dancing in swan lake. I also thought it was funny when Mr Parkin came on when auditions were being held to put together Labyrinth and he was breakdancing.

CSI Reading Tornado Story

Tornado Story:

When I was ten I was in a Tornado. I was taking my Dog for a walk along a quiet road and next
minute I hear the wind picking up. I start to panic a bit and then I pick up my Dog and run for it. I then
see the clouds turning and twirling into black and the wind is starting to make a circular hoop in the
air. I am wondering if my family back home is ok. I can’t imagine how my family is feeling about me. I am speechless. My Dog is shaking with fear. I am sprinting and holding my breath desperately wanting to make it home to my family before I get picked up in the air and spun around with my Dog and then get tossed to the solid, firm ground.

Camp Happenings

Camp Happenings

The funniest happening on camp was watching people fall into the river off rocks. Steffanie and Brooke were rock hopping and Brooke went for a little swim. Brooke went over to the middle and climbed up on a rock. Steffanie went over there too. Brooke wanted Steffanie go in the water too but Steffanie wasn’t so sure. I was videoing them while waiting for Steffanie to jump in the Brooke. The countdown started and they linked arms and then Brooke jumped and Steffanie didn’t! Brooke climbed back up and then Brooke convinced Steffanie to jump in so Steffanie counted down and didn’t jump. Anyway about 10 minutes later she decided to jump. As soon as she touched the water she started screaming because the water was about 5-6 degrees!

The biggest challenge on camp was Paintball because I was so freaked out that I didn’t shoot 1 bullet. I’m not sure if I got shot because I had so many layers on! But I didn’t shoot any bullets because I was just too freaked out. It was my 2nd time playing and last year when I played at camp I got shot about 5-7 times and it was exciting but this year I guess I was just a little scared and freaked out.

The scariest happening on camp was when my Aimee, Steffanie and I were rafting down the river in out tubes and we were just about to finish and then Steffanie’s leg get caught in a rock. We race up and get a parent and they carried her up into the common room. We ended up getting 5 seconds behind the record for rafting, so we were all very proud but frightened because we didn’t know what was going to happen with Steffanie. They called her Dad and then he took her to hospital. Steffanie came back that night and was better but she had crutches. Today back at school she has a moonboot.

The most exhausting moment was on the first night and we were doing the cooking competition. I thought this was challenging and exhausting because people were running everywhere and I couldn’t find the garlic crusher that I put in a plastic bag. But in the end our meal was delicious and I was very pleased at everything.

The most embarrassing moment was when we were doing the stream study I went to step onto a rock and the rock was so slippery and mossy that I fell into the water face first. The water was so cold and had rocks everywhere. I was not planning to fall in and get very cold!

The most dangerous moment was when Felila was bouncing on the trampoline and she went to do a backflip and landed on her neck and back. She started screaming and banging on the trampoline. Someone ran and got a parent. They sat with her on the trampoline with blankets and someone was holding her neck so it wouldn’t move. The ambulance arrived an hour later and took her to the hospital. We were all waiting back at camp for the results. She ended up going home from the hospital at 11.45pm and came back to camp the next day and ended up pinching a nerve in her neck. It was very frightening especially because I was there when it happened and saw everything.

3 things I learnt
1. I learnt to have a go at everything and not be shy.
2. I learnt how to climb a climbing the vertical and horizontal playpen and how to abseil
3. I learnt how to make damper and how to start a fire.

2 things I was surprised about
1. I was surprised that we were 5 seconds behind the record for rafting I was surprised because of what happened  to Steffanie that we got such a fast time still.
2. I was surprised that Felila was alright after that bad landing.

I question I still have
My question is why can’t camp be longer?

Student Led Conferences

What happened? My Mum and I walked into the classroom and sat down. Mrs Mills came over and talked to my Mum and I about my results and what I need to work on. We sat talked for 10-15 minutes and then I showed my Mum my presentation. Mrs Mills and I then showed my Mum some maths warmups and and Mum and I did mathopolis. I won. My Mum answered 52 and I answer 102. I got 50 more than her.

What did you like/dislike about it? I really enjoyed Mrs Mills explaining things to me and how to do some Maths equations and how to do some more punctuation. I also liked how I bet my Mum in my mathopolis. I disliked that I didn't get some of the Maths questions.

What feedback did your whanau give you? My Mum said that she is very proud of me with the scores that I got. She said that she will encourage  me to practice more and to try my hardest in things. She also said the things I need to work on and that she will help me achieve them.

What would you change if you could?

I would probably change not practicing and the time that we spent on most things.

Homework Challenge 2

2.  For my second homework challenge I chose to do:

E6. Join the productionchoir, a band or Kapa Haka participating in all
rehearsals and performances for the year.

For this challenge I am in the production for T.I.S. I am a dancer in the swan lake scene, I am so excited to do a production with the school. I really love dancing and Im so passionate about it.

I am also in choir. I really enjoy singing especially with a group of people. I really like learning new songs and then doing the music festival  The theme this year for choir is Summer. So we are doing songs like summer time and summer holiday. I really like those songs.

As a year 8 student at T.I.S I am trying to go for any opportunity that comes up along the year. I am so excited and can't wait to see what opportunities are to come through the rest of the year.

My First Post

In my first month at school Rimu house has been doing lots of fitness, we have been doing runs twice a week and zumba twice a week and P.E the other morning, we have also been doing an inter house competition that is called the Round Robin. There are 4 groups and 4 rotations and four sports they are Softball, Cricket, Volley Ball and Touch.
I have had Hockey trials for the past two weeks and I have another trial next wednesday, I really enjoy playing Hockey.
Our school is also having a production in June call "A most Triumphant Tale." I tried out for a dance part in the show and I got it so I am very excited about that.
We have been doing a lot of maths on Order Of Operations and I learnt about B.E.D.M.A.S.
Rimu has made up a chant and we are competing about all the different houses.
This is our chant:

Leader: Attention!!
Leader: Sound off

29, 30, 41, 42.

Don't wait, don't hesitate, the battle has begun,
Computate and dominate, RIMU are number 1,
We got it together,
We're moving to the top,
Rimus Red Army, impossible to stop.

Strawberry Shortcake, Banana Split
We think your house plays like-
Shift it to the left,
Shift to the right,
Stand up RIMU Fight! Fight! Fight!
